Abstract

This paper explores the history of music during the birth of the modern penitentiary in the nineteenth century and explores how music became incorporated into the discourse and technology of the emerging carceral state. The paper begins with a systematic review of literature produced by nineteenth century penal reformers in Europe and America. Then, this paper examines the relationship between music and the self through its relationship with the self. Finally, the paper concludes by summarising some of the key points for further consideration.
